Amazing Safari in Tanzania

Safari in Tanzania! one of those trips that would rank very high in the top of your best trips ever list. My wife did it before and I honestly did not believe it would be as impressive as she described it to be. And when you look at the costs, they are quite daunting. But honestly, I assure you, this sort of trip will exceed your expectations as it did mine. A once in a life time destination that you would want to visit over and over again. A memory that can not easily be erased. We made this trip our grand finale to almost a year of traveling around the world. A year of being homeless and living out of suitcases, and what a finale it was..

A long day of travels, I sure hope it is worth it

The day was Hong Kong style hectic. We are about to leave on the red eye flight to Johannesburg, but before that I have a last minute job interview and we are frantically exchanging emails with our real estate broker as we are about to close the lease on a place to stay. This time no suitcases to be packed, but backpacks (yes yes, you think, how can you post it here if it's not...Read more

A first glimpse of the wild

Alarm buzzing in the middle of the night, followed by a wake-up call from the hotel lobby, this could only mean one thing, off to the airport again. We armed all devices with alarm bells to make us leave the safety and comfort of our hotel, the Movenpick Royal Palm , and to continue our exploration into the heart of Africa. We had a decent although very short night of sleep and where ready for...Read more

The Ngorongoro crater, a small wonder of nature

It was not the loud ring of an alarm bell or the irritating noise of a phone that woke us up this morning, no this morning the soft sounds of nature greet us from our sleep. As the sun is just about to rise above the rim of the mighty Ngorongoro crater awakening the birds and other animals living in its shadow. We can catch a glimpse of this magnificent spectacle from the balcony of...Read more

Cheetahs and lions

After several mornings of awakening at the break of dawn we finally get to sleep in a little today. Only a little though as our internal clock has grown accustomed to the early mornings. It's remarkable how quick the body adjusts to the travel lifestyle. So a few minutes after the sun rise we have our morning shower and pack up our bags. Oh do I miss our Samsonites now, what an incredible pain in...Read more

Sunset Rock

A fresh pot of coffee on the porch of our tent and a gentle ‘Jambo, Jambo, wake up time’ was the start of our day. It was the break of dawn, the grass was still wet under our feet from the morning dew. The smells of fresh grass, trees and freshly brewed coffee was fantastic. The clean and crisp air is almost intoxicating, what a wonderful morning this is. But what a night this has...Read more

Two hours east of the middle of nowhere

What a glorious day this would be. We are getting a bit more accustomed to the sounds of the wild so the night was more restful than yesterday. Another horde of wildebeest passed through camp this night making their curious sounds of snorts and burps, but today they did not startle us. As you might have guessed, I am not a camping person at all, but I think I can get used to this is...Read more

Liquid gold

To shower or not to shower, that was the question. Yes our fly camp, two hours east of the middle of nowhere , is equipped with a bucket shower. But not a shower curtain, and not even a proper bush to guard our privacy. So taking a shower would mean an adult show for the entourage that accompanied us to this remote location. The alternative was taking a plunge in the nearby stream, but this...Read more

From Serengeti to Arusha to Stonetown to Matemwe

Only one more game drive before we have to head back to Arusha. The rain from last night made this morning even better than the mornings before. The dew that arose from the soil had the wonderful smell of fresh grass. A bad day for people with hay fever, but for us it was exhilarating. We wrestle with those darn backpacks once more, trying to squash everything back in. After that we made one last...Read more

Time to reflect

Today will be a day of rest, a day to reflect on our short but intense experience of the Tanzanian wild. It feels kind of strange not having to do anything today. No game drive or camping out somewhere under the stars. Just a day to recover from the early mornings and to enjoy our luxurious surroundings. The contrast with the local peril is uncomforting though. Just behind the high wall of the resort is...Read more

A dive at Mnemba island

Mnemba island , a small sand bank, five hundred meters across coast to coast, the home of the even more expensive Beyond Mnemba Island lodge. During peak season a hut on the beach will set you back roughly fifteen hundred dollars a day, that is per person of course. This means that an average local would have to save for more than five years, just to spend one night on this sand bank. I can’t...Read more

Travis Hudson

My name is Travis Hudson and I've been roaming the globe since 2004. My interests for a traveling lifestyle sprouted late in life as I started my first big adventure when I was only 25, aside from the usual family holidays that is. For me it started with a spur of the moment emigration to the...Read more
